A Wildcard SSL certificate secures a primary domain and an unlimited number of its subdomains with a single certificate, simplifying SSL management.

It uses a wildcard character (*) to cover the primary domain and all its subdomains. For example, it secures both example.com and *.example.com.

A Wildcard SSL certificate is the most cost-effective and convenient way to secure your entire domain and all its subdomains with just one certificate. Instead of buying separate SSLs for www.yourdomain.com, shop.yourdomain.com, mail.yourdomain.com, and more – a Wildcard SSL covers them all.

This not only saves you money, but also simplifies management with a single installation and renewal date. If your website has (or plans to have) multiple subdomains, a Wildcard SSL gives you flexibility, scalability, and complete protection without the extra cost or hassle.

Wildcard SSL certificates secure a primary domain and an unlimited number of its subdomains, making them ideal for websites with multiple subdomains like blog.example.com and shop.example.com. In contrast, SAN (Subject Alternative Name) SSL certificates, also known as Multi-Domain SSL certificates, can secure multiple different domains and subdomains under a single certificate. This makes SAN SSL certificates suitable for businesses that need to secure various domain names, such as example.com, example.net, and shop.example.org. The choice depends on whether you need to secure unlimited subdomains of one domain (Wildcard) or multiple distinct domains (SAN).

No – a Wildcard SSL certificate only covers one level of subdomains. It will not automatically secure sub-subdomains (sometimes called second-level subdomains).

To illustrate, if you purchase a Wildcard SSL for *.example.com, it will secure:

  • shop.example.com
  • mail.example.com
  • blog.example.com

However, it will not cover deeper levels such as:

  • mail.blog.example.com
  • checkout.shop.example.com
  • secure.mail.example.com

The wildcard character (*) only substitutes for a single label in the domain name, meaning it applies to exactly one level below the domain it’s issued for.

So what are your options if you need sub-subdomain coverage?

You have a few routes available:

  • Purchase a separate Wildcard SSL for each subdomain level – for example, a second Wildcard SSL for *.blog.example.com would cover news.blog.example.com, archive.blog.example.com, and so on. This is often the most straightforward solution.
  • Use a Multi-Domain SAN certificate – a SAN SSL lets you list specific domains and subdomains individually on a single certificate, giving you precise control over exactly what’s covered, across multiple domains and levels if needed.
  • Restructure your subdomain architecture – if your site is still being built or you have flexibility, it’s worth considering whether sub-subdomains are necessary. Flattening your structure to a single subdomain level (e.g. shop.example.com instead of checkout.store.example.com) keeps your Wildcard certificate sufficient and your setup simpler.

It depends on the type of validation you choose. Wildcard SSL certificates are available with two levels of validation, Domain Validation (DV) and Organisation Validation (OV), and the issuance time differs significantly between them.

Domain Validation (DV) Wildcard SSL – Minutes to a Few Hours

DV Wildcard certificates are the fastest to obtain. Once you’ve placed your order, the certificate authority simply needs to confirm that you own or control the domain. This is done automatically via one of three methods:

  • Email verification – a confirmation email is sent to a standard administrative address associated with your domain (e.g. admin@yourdomain.com or webmaster@yourdomain.com). Click the link and your certificate is issued almost immediately.
  • DNS record – you add a specific TXT or CNAME record to your domain’s DNS settings. Once the CA detects the record, issuance is triggered automatically.
  • File upload – you upload a small verification file to your web server, which the CA then checks.

In most cases, a DV Wildcard SSL is issued within minutes, though DNS propagation can occasionally push this to a few hours if you’re using the DNS verification method.

Organisation Validation (OV) Wildcard SSL – 1 to 3 Business Days

OV Wildcard certificates take longer because the certificate authority goes beyond domain ownership and also verifies that your business is a legitimate, registered organisation. This typically involves:

  • Confirming your company’s legal name and registration details (usually checked against Companies House or similar official registries)
  • Verifying your business address and phone number
  • In some cases, making a brief automated or manual phone call to a verified business number

Because parts of this process involve human review, OV issuance typically takes 1 to 3 business days, though it can occasionally be quicker if your business details are easily verifiable.

Which should you choose?

If you need a certificate quickly and your primary goal is encryption and the padlock in the browser, a DV Wildcard SSL is the right choice — it’s fast, affordable, and perfectly sufficient for most websites.

If you’re a business that wants to demonstrate a higher level of trust and legitimacy – particularly if you’re handling customer data, running an e-commerce store, or operating in a regulated industry – an OV Wildcard SSL is worth the extra validation time. It displays your verified business name in the certificate details, which adds an additional layer of credibility for security-conscious visitors.

Tips to speed up issuance

Regardless of which validation type you choose, you can avoid unnecessary delays by:

  • Making sure your WHOIS contact details are up to date and match the details you submit during the order process
  • Having access to a standard administrative email address on your domain before you begin
  • For OV certificates, ensuring your business is listed correctly with Companies House (or equivalent) before applying

A static site seal and a dynamic site seal are both visual indicators provided by SSL certificate authorities to show that a website is secured, but they differ in functionality:

  1. Static Site Seal:
    • A simple image or logo placed on the website.
    • Does not provide real-time information.
    • Always looks the same, regardless of the site’s SSL status.
    • Typically used with basic SSL certificates.
  2. Dynamic Site Seal:
    • An interactive seal that links to real-time verification information.
    • Displays the website’s security status when clicked, such as the issuing certificate authority, SSL details, and validation status.
    • Used with more advanced SSL certificates, like Extended Validation (EV) or Organization Validation (OV) certificates.

In essence, a static seal is just a symbol of security, while a dynamic seal verifies the current, active status of the certificate.
